About this tool

Paste your text to see an exact character count, with and without spaces, alongside word, sentence and paragraph totals. Characters are counted the way a person would count them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one character rather than two or three. Nothing is uploaded.

Character limits show up in more places than word limits do: meta descriptions, SMS messages, database fields, form validation and social posts. The two numbers that matter are usually with spaces for display limits and without spaces for academic requirements — this tool shows both at once.

For search results specifically, aim for 50–60 characters in a title tag and 140–160 in a meta description, both counted with spaces.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my count differ from another character counter?
Most likely emoji or accented characters. We count grapheme clusters — what you see as one character. Tools that count UTF-16 code units report 2 for most emoji and more for flags or skin-tone variants.
Which count do social platforms use?
It varies. Bluesky and Mastodon count graphemes, matching this tool. X counts weighted code points, so emoji count as 2. For a hard platform limit, always verify in the platform's own composer.
Does this count spaces and line breaks?
The with-spaces figure counts every space, tab and line break. The without-spaces figure excludes all whitespace, which is what most academic and form character limits mean.
